The VFW Post 2591 held a Patriot Day Celebration at the Sedalia VFW last Sunday afternoon (Sept. 8). VFW Post Commander Larry Reven led the ceremony, recognizing veterans from the conflicts in Panama, Grenada, Kosovo, Bosnia, Desert Storm and the War on Terrorism.

The VFW Color Guard posted and retired the colors, Richard DeFord sang the National Anthem and sang "In God We Still Trust," Post Chaplain Dan Ballah led the prayers and the Ladies Auxiliary led the POW/MIA presentation. The most solemn portion of the ceremony was when the audience was invited to remember fallen patriots from previous wars and conflicts.

In addition to the Patriot's Day Program, auctioneers Glen Glidewell, Skip Bay and Rusty Johnson led a pie auction that raised money for the various programs the VFW supports. This year, they also added a new fundraiser where various people volunteered to have a pie thrown at their face. Many stood til the very end of the auction as 4th Ward Councilman Larry Stevenson volunteered his face for the occasion. His one auction went for $125 and he took the pie to the face. I also volunteered for this occasion and raised $24 with the added incentive that my son, Gabriel, could be the one that throws the pie into my face.
