Have you ever come across the term "zebra striping"?

I haven't either.  But I saw it on the Facebook the other day.  I'll explain.  This enjoyable strategy might be just what you need for your next holiday party to help you manage your alcohol consumption while still having a great time.

What is Zebra Striping?

Zebra striping is the practice of alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages throughout the event. The term comes from the visual imagery of a zebra's alternating black and white stripes. While the name may sound a bit quirky, the strategy is quite effective in promoting moderate drinking.

Here's how you can implement zebra striping at your gathering:

1. Start with Your Favorite Drink.

Begin the night with an alcoholic beverage of your choice, whether it's a festive cocktail, a glass of wine, or a cold beer.

2. Follow Up with a Non-Alcoholic Option.

After your first drink, switch to a non-alcoholic option like sparkling water, soda, or juice. This way, you give your body a break from alcohol.

3. Stick to the Rule.

Make it a rule that you can’t have two alcoholic drinks in a row. This simple guideline will naturally limit your alcohol intake throughout the evening.

Why is Zebra Striping Effective?

It keeps you hydrated. Alternating drinks with water or other non-alcoholic options helps keep you hydrated. Alcohol can dehydrate you, but by drinking water in between, you can combat those effects.  It also helps to control your consumption.  This technique helps you pace yourself, making it less likely that you'll overindulge. When your stomach feels full, you’re less inclined to keep reaching for more cocktails.  For those who might feel anxious about socializing, zebra striping can provide a sense of control. It gives you something to sip on when you feel nervous, without resorting to constant drinking.

So basically, "Zebra Striping" is not only a clever method for managing your drinking at parties, but it also ensures you’ll stay hydrated and feel good throughout the night. So, the next time you’re planning a celebration or attending a gathering, consider giving zebra striping a try. You can enjoy yourself and have a fabulous time while keeping your drinking in check! Cheers to a safe and enjoyable holiday season!

Zebraingly yours,

Behka
