For Sale: 15 Million Leftover Girl Scout Cookies

With so many people eating more during the pandemic you'd think this is one item that wouldn't be available but it's true. The Girl Scouts have millions of unsold cookies.

Even though many packed on another 15 lbs. or so during our extended stays at home during the coronavirus, the culprit that has caused an over-abundance of America's favorite cookies is COVID-19 as reported in a story from the Associated Press (AP).

Due to the traditional Girl Scout cookie booths not appearing for safety reasons in many locations across the United States, the spring selling season wasn't plentiful. According to Kelly Parisi, a spokeswoman for Girl Scouts of the USA:

“This is unfortunate, but given this is a girl-driven program and the majority of cookies are sold in-person, it was to be expected.”

Normally, around 200 million boxes of cookies are sold by the Girl Scouts per year. That equates to around $800 million of tastiness. Unfortunately, due to the lower number of sales this will impact the Girl Scouts' funding of camps, travel, and other activities.

Instead of selling person-to-person in booths like they normally would, the Girls Scouts chose to change their way of selling, trying the online approach and the cookies were even offered through Grubhub.

Forecasters made their prediction of sales and even with the pandemic in mind, those numbers fell short...by a large margin.

Two bakers, Louisville, Kentucky-based Little Brownie Bakers and Brownsburg, Indiana-based ABC Bakers are the ones currently "holding the bag" as they have an abundance of the cookies on hand-around 13 million. The other three million cookies are with the Girl Scout Councils. They are hoping to sell or even donate them as AP story reports the cookies have a 12-month shelf life.
