Give Your Young Women the Gift of Leadership through Scouting

Warrensburg Region VI School District posted a graphic on Facebook advertising the opportunity for Warrensburg Girls to attend Girl Scout Troop 3431's first meeting this coming Tuesday, November 9.

I'll be the first to admit, scouting isn't for everyone. I never made it out of Cub Scouts, but I know a few friends that enjoyed scouting. Both girls and guys. So I decided to see what the benefits of scouting are from the Girl Scouts of North East Kansas and Northwest Missouri.

The key benefit of girl scouting, according to the Girl Scouts of North East Kansas and Northwest Missouri is Leadership.

"Lead like a Girl Scout" is the headline on their page extolling the virtues of girl scouting. That's followed by the acronym G.I.R.L. Which stands for:

G- Go Getter

I- Innovator

R- Risk Taker

L-Leader

If they had sold the Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts that way I may have given them more of a chance. That said, I was up to my ears doing crafts I wasn't very good at and that I generally thought were boring. And I don't think the Creighton family as a whole were interested in the aspect of camping. And camping, was a big deal when it came to scouting in my day.

Todays Girl Scouts blow my perception of scouting from 80's out of the water in two sentences. "While some people still think of us as just cookies, badges, campfires, and friendship bracelets, Girl Scouts are so much more. Girl Scouts are groundbreakers, big thinkers, and role models."

They go on to say, the acronym G.I.R.L., "are the traits that define girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. This is the Girl Scout DNA. It could be part of your DNA too—whatever your age, gender, or background! The only question is, are you ready to take the lead...like a Girl Scout?"

Like I said scouting isn't for eveyone. Yet if you like the Girl Scouts approach to scouting, it might be something to have your kids check out. Troop 3431 is having their first meeting at Trails Library on Tuesday, November 9 from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM CST. And you can learn more about membership here.
