Can You Guess What Missouri’s Most Popular Bread Is?
Do you think you can guess what Missouri's most popular bread is? There's no way I would have guessed. Your six your old son or daughter has a better chance of guessing what bread is the most popular in Missouri, than you or me.
That's because according to a new study commissioned by a famous unnamed jewelry company based in Colorado, the type of bread most popular in Missouri is the hot dog bun.
Isn't that a little depressing?
Look, hot dog buns are great. It's the perfect conveyance to hold a hot dog with all the fixings. In Chicago, they drag it through the garden and the poppy seed buns do the job of containing the dog, mustard, relish, onions, tomato wedges, a pickle spear, a couple of sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt.
In New York, they work for the vendors on the street who'll sell you a dog from their cart with mustard and onions. While in Milwaukee the hot dog bun serves more than hot dogs, it's the bread you use when you're eating a polish, or really, any sausage grilled up in the backyard.
So I'm not denigrating the hot dog bun. It does yeoman's work to help fill your belly with tasty foods that your doctor may not approve of. It's just not that exciting. When was the last time you got excited about a hot dog bun?
I get more excited over the piece of the French Baguette Panera throws in with your salad or soup than I do a hot dog bun. Not to mention, a deli meat sandwich between a hearty steak roll, ciabatta roll, french roll, or a hard roll, excites me more than a hot dog bun. I get more excited over buttered toast or Sister Schubert's or King's Hawaiian dinner rolls than I do over a hot dog bun. Hell, I get more excited over a piece of sad white bread at the bottom of my open-faced roast beef sandwich drenched in gravy than I do a hot dog bun.
Missouri is home to Panera, also known as the St. Louis Bread Company. Yaknow, the place that gives you a French Baguette with your salad. The place with the spectacularly yummy bagels and bread bowls for your soup. We should be able to do better than a hot dog bun.
Of course, it could be worse, we could be in West Virginia, they're as 'bout as white bread as it can get.
