What to Do When Encountering a Funeral Procession While Driving

When you're driving down the road and you encounter a funeral procession coming towards you or you see one coming behind you, should you pull over? Many wonder what's the right thing to do.

For many states there are no specific law that states that you must pull your vehicle over to the side of the road for a funeral procession, however: tradition dictates that you pull over to show respect.

This is something that many don't adhere here to anymore as they think what they have to do is more important than to show respect, but think about it. If it was your family in line in your vehicle, following the hearse and you noticed all the vehicles along the path to the cemetery had pulled over to honor the life of the individual that was being transported, wouldn't it make you feel a little better? Like there is still some good in this crazy world?

There are laws in Missouri to protect those in the procession. Emotions are running high and the last thing you need is to be involved in an accident at that time. Police officers or other officials from the local police department can be involved with the organized funeral procession, and use their motor vehicles to escort the funeral procession to the burial grounds from the funeral services, and usually will coordinate with the funeral director and funeral home to make the process as efficient as possible.

Make sure you turn on your lights while you're in the procession and follow as closely as possible all the way to the cemetary.
