Free to Enter, Impossible to Forget: Experience the Pow Wow
This weekend, the Missouri State Fairgrounds will be filled with the sound of drums, the swirl of regalia, and the smell of something absolutely delicious frying. It’s time for the Robert Woolery Sr. Memorial Pow Wow! It's a powerful celebration of Native American culture, history, and community that draws people from all across the region.
In fact, it was one of my first dates with NJ! Not our very first, but maybe like, fourth or fifth date? Something like that. It's actually a great evening for a date, because you get to walk around slowly looking at the vendors and talking, and there's always music or whatnot to fill in any awkward silences. Seriously!
Even if you don’t know much about Native traditions (yet), or you’re not sure how a Pow Wow works, don’t worry. You don't have to have be experienced at all. This event is for everyone. There’s music, dancing, a great vendor area, and enough fry bread to make you question why you ever settled for toast. I don't know if they'll have a fry bread vendor there, but they have in the past. And it was unforgettable.
JK feels me on this one. ANYWAY.
Whether you're coming for culture, food, or both (let’s be honest—it’s both), you’ll be glad you made the trip. Have a look at this video a nice lady made who attended this Pow Wow in years past. She takes you through some highlights, it's only about two minutes or so (with a cute baby - who has to be in school by now!).
It's just a taste but it does show you how colorful and fun it is! And, it shows you how the whole family gets involved - Grandpa, Gramma, Dad and Mom, and the littlest of little kids!

The drummers and dancers are truly world-class, and the energy in the arena is something you have to feel to believe. There’s no better way to spend a summer weekend than soaking up beautiful traditions and rhythmic beats—plus, it’s all happening in the blessed, glorious air conditioning of the Ag Building. I mean, for someone who hates the sticky and gross humidity.... this is ideal.
Admission is free. Parking is free. Entertainment? Also free. You just need a comfy chair or a spot on the bleachers and a little curiosity. Or maybe one of those donut pillows. The event runs this weekend, July 19th through the 21st. Dancing starts Saturday morning and evening sessions, and wraps up Sunday afternoon. Times are flexible—things move at a community pace, not a stopwatch. More info, including directions, is on Facebook.
Wowingly yours,
Behka
