Weekend Road Trip Ideas: See The Weirdest Sculpture in Missouri
I know we've got a fair amount of cool stuff going on in Sedalia this weekend, but sometimes you need a break to get outta town, don't you.
When I saw this sculpture, I almost wondered if it was really real. But it is! It's called The Awakening, and it's in Chesterfield (which is a little ways out of St Louis).
It was created first by a guy named Seward Johnson in 1980. Then in 2009, it was installed in a park by Sachs Properties. According to the City of Chesterfield's website:
The aluminum sculpture is buried in the ground, giving the impression of a distressed giant attempting to free himself from the ground. The left hand and right foot barely protrude, while the bent left leg and knee jut into the air. The bearded face, with the mouth in mid-scream, struggles to emerge from the earth......This monumental sculpture, measuring 70 feet in length and 17 feet at its tallest point was first cast by sculptor Seward Johnson in 1980 for a sculpture exhibition in Washington, D.C. This second casting is a permanent addition to the Chesterfield landscape.
It definitely seems like it's worth a weekend drive to go see it. I can imagine some crazy photos you could take with the family, right?!
Sculptingly yours,
Behka
