The Truth About Eye Opening Thanksgiving Costs in Missouri for 2024

The holiday may not be until later in November this year, but farmers, economists, and home cooks alike are gearing up for it right now.

Dr. Michael Swanson, the executive director of Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute's Pre-Turkey Day report, gave some early pricing insights to "Good Morning America" ahead of the report.

Compared to last year, turkeys will cost 16% less for the main event. Those who prefer pork over poultry should note that ham prices have increased 5.2% since last year.

While there is a lot of disagreement over which dish is best at Thanksgiving, it seems most people agree that the meal is really all about the sides, which appear repeatedly in internet searches.

Prices may be higher this year for some staple ingredients.

Specifically, sweet potatoes have been on the rise by 4% and russet potatoes, which are often used in mashed potatoes and potato au gratin, are on the rise by 14%, according to Swanson.

For Thanksgiving dishes, many may reach for canned goods, but this may be the year to buy fresh. In comparison to last year, the price of canned green beans is up nearly 9%, and the price of canned pumpkin is up 30%.

Luckily, grocery chains looking to compete for shoppers' dollars are already planning their Thanksgiving discounts.  Aldi shared that it will offer its third-lowest-priced Thanksgiving meal in five years, a basket that serves full meals for up to 10 people for under $47. The offer is available now through Christmas at Aldi stores nationwide.

Walmart also recently unveiled its "inflation-free" Thanksgiving that serves 8 people for less than $7 per plate. It comes with 29 customer favorite holiday items, including turkey -- which comes out to just $0.88 per pound -- trimmings and dessert.
