The Sedalia Snack Squad Takes On: The World
This month, our Snack Squad adventure isn't just in one country, but Christmas traditions from all around the world! We thought we might just get one tradition, but every snack is from a different country. We get to experience it all in one go! Anyway, let's get to it. Less yackin, more snackin!
Qualitats Marzipan Brot. (Germany)
Behka: Very classy packaging. It smells like an Almond Joy. Oh, that's nice. That's nice. Not too sweet. I don't know if I've ever had marzipan before. I just know marzipan as a character from Homestar Runner. Whatever happened to Homestar Runner? I used to like those videos.
Husbando: Tastes like marzipan and dark chocolate. I can't really say it's good or bad, it's just.. what it is.
Jenn: Chocolate covered marzipan is always good.
Pierniki Uszatki. (Poland)
Behka: WOAH. That's a strong smell. They look like Papa Jake's donut holes. Much harder, though. I can smell the mint, but I can't taste it. I just get a chewy gingerbread. It's... okay. I'm not personally offended by it. It just didn't deliver on my mint levels.
Husbando: Minty! Gingerbready! You instantly smell both things. I never would have thought gingerbread and mint would go together...this is amazing. Mmmm. That's good.
Jenn: These look like fidget spinners. And tastes like weird like they aren’t awful? Very Christmas like.
Stranznicke Bromburky. (Czech Republic)
Behka: It almost smells like curry. OH LORD. OH LORD. That's... something. It's kinda spicy. It's got the bite of fresh wasabi or horseradish. It's good, though. It slaps you in the face and then gives you a reassuring hug. I could rock this again. It was very shocking, though. Almost rude. How dare you, snack?
Husbando: Mustard potato chips. *Winces* It's good. That is a STRONG flavor. That is good, though. Hmm. I could definitely snack on a giant bag of that.
Jenn: OMG ITS SO SPICY. WHAT IS HAPPENING.
Prickly Pear Yugwa Candy. (South Korea)
Behka: Very cute packaging. It almost looks like pop rocks on a Cheeto. It doesn't smell like anything. That's confusing. It's chewy and a little sweet, but not really sweet like a candy. I don't know, maybe my expectations were a little high since I've been reading and watching so much stuff from South Korea lately.
Husbando: It doesn't have a smell. No, it does. It smells like puffed rice cereal. It doesn't really have a flavor. It really tastes like nothing.
Jenn: First thoughts: is this a Cheeto covered in pop rocks? Turns out: it is a packing peanut covered in soft nerds. Oddly flavorless, yet satisfying.
Behka: It's very hard. It took some effort to break it in half. It looks like a Nestle Crunch bar. It's so hard. You know what it reminds me of, it reminds me of candy you'd sell in high school for band. This doesn't seem very Christmas, though. But who am I to tell them how to celebrate their holidays? I'm like Shakira, a small ant in the scope of the universe.
Husbando: I think it's really good. It's good chocolate, a little bit of crunch.
Popsile Sweet Egg Yolk Popcorn. (Taiwan)
Behka: It smells like movie theater popcorn, almost. It isn't really an egg yolk taste until I get to the aftertaste. It's unusual. It's good, it's just something I've never had before. That's... almost disturbing. It's just... so different. I don't know what to think about it, but I do like it, I do. It gave me a strange first impression, though.
Husbando: We're helping to celebrate the dragon boat festival by eating this. Ooooh! It smells really good! It smells almost cheesy. *confused look* It's vaguely reminiscent of an egg yolk. But it's really good popcorn. That's GOOD. It's vaguely off-putting. But the taste is good.
Jenn: I am going to be honest with you guys, THIS IS REVOLTING. Its like weird spoiled sweet, but super salty and super weird. But its also kind of addictive. I tricked Tim the new guy into trying it and he was like ‘eh its ok.’ So that was disappointing as heck.
Piselli Pandoro Chocolate Cream. (Italy)
Behka: It kinda smells like a Twinkie. Kinda tastes like those little cakes, too. The chocolate is almost like a jam or jelly. That's pleasant. I like it. It's fine. It's not super remarkable, though. It's better with the chocolate than just the cake on its own.
Husbando: It's squishy. Pandoro means golden bread in Italian. It's Italian, it's amazing. Hmmm. It's better with the chocolate. It's really good, though.
Jenn: Oh I like this. More of this please.
Jabri Mixed Baklava. (Jordan)
Behka: It's deceptively bigger than it looks. Lots of nice nutty flavor. It just melts like you expect baklava to do. So good. It's so pretty. I have to show you what it looks like.
Husbando: It's a lot in your mouth. That's what she said. That is reaaaaallly good baklava. I really like it. I like it better than some of the commercially prepared Greek baklava's we've had. I can tell this is more hand made.
Jenn: Yooooo…Baklava is awesome. Full stop.
Sol Del Cusco Chocolate. (Peru)
Behka: We can't just eat this, we have to turn it into hot chocolate. Eh. It's okay. I was expecting some spice or something. I don't know what I was expecting but this wasn't it. It was just okay. Slightly cinnamon hot chocolate.
Husbando: You can turn this into hot chocolate. I like it. Very cinnamon-y. I really like it. I think this would be really good on a cold, miserable day.
Jenn: It was good, but not what I was expecting. I was hoping it would be spicier.
Jumbo Raspberry Humantaschen. (USA)
Behka: It's very soft. It's like a jelly, a thick jelly. I can really smell and taste the berries. It's very crumbly. Very nice. I don't know if I've had Hamentach, though. It's just a dessert, right?
Husbando: *full mouth* Just write thumbs up! It's really good. It's not overly sweet. That's the best part about it, that's it's not overly sweet.
Jenn: This is like a raspberry short bread, I can dig it. Pretty tasty.
Stockley's Mince Pie Fudge. (The UK)
Behka: I'm not excited about this. Oh. That's like a mutated pumpkin pie. It's not pleasant. I... don't care for that. This tastes like every mistake I've ever made in my life. This tastes like someone just went out of their way to insult me and my family. This is the worst thing in this box so far.
Husbando: MIIIIINCE PIIIE FUDGE! Mmmm. Smells like gingerbread. It tastes like gingerbread fudge.
Jenn: Oooooooh boy. I am very very skeptical. OH MY GOSH WHAT IS HAPPENING. I hate to report I spat it in my trash. I didn’t even have the heart to make Tim the new guy try it.
Pink Champagne Candy. (The UK)
Behka: I always dread the hard candy. That... tastes exactly like champagne. It's a little too big for your mouth. Almost a little lemony. But I'm not going to finish that.
Husbando: It's Scottish, I think. *contemplates* It...tastes like hard candy? It's kinda sour, kinda sweet. Not that special.
Jenn: I'm using this as a palate cleanser after the Mince Pie Fudge Disaster, it is a very pleasant hard candy.
Lucky New Year's Candy. (China)
Behka: WOAH. That looks strange. It smells like nuts. Oh. That's a pleasant surprise. The consistency is like a Butterfinger.
Husbando: It tastes like a Butterfinger! So on Chinese New Year, we can just eat Butterfingers! GOOD FORTUNE! *HIGH FIVE*
Jenn: It looks like a flaky cement brick, it tastes not bad?
Behka: I think this was probably our best box so far. I didn't like a couple of things, but the things I did like I liked a lot. My favorite was probably a tie between the Mustard chips and the egg yolk popcorn. My least favorite was the Mince Pie fudge. Weirdest was probably the champagne candy.
Husbando: Overall, a really good box. I don't think there was anything in the box that was gross, which is weird because they usually have at least one. But everything was good. The only one I didn't get was the South Korean one. It had no flavor. My favorite was the the Mustard Potato Chips by far. Least favorite was the prickly pear. Weirdest one was egg flavored popcorn.
Jenn: WORST AND WEIRDEST: Mince Pie Fudge. I am outraged this even exists. Burn it with fire. Plz. Best: Piselli Pandoro Chocolate Cream: It was just overall delicious and pleasant. Final thoughts, there were some awesome things in this box and some truly awful things. All in all it was a great trip around the world!
