For consumers that filed complaints against insurance companies, the Missouri Department of Insurance helped consumers receive the additional money in claim payments in the first half of 2017.

With health insurance companies receiving the most formal complaints in the first of the year, (701) MID helped to return $4 million to those and other complainants. Agents complaints received the second most with 489. Most of the complaints filed were about claim denials and claim delays.

Nearly 10,000 phone calls were answered by the department’s consumer complaint team handling 1,400 inquiries and assisting with 2,000 complaints in the first half of the year.

Also released was the Consumer Complaint Index. The index includes data for seven lines of business including private passenger automobile, life and annuity, accident and health, long-term care, Medicare supplement, HMO's and homeowners which includes farm, mobile home, personal fire and allied lines.

The index can help consumers choose insurance companies by allowing them to compare the number of complaints against a company.

If you have insurance related questions or questions about the Consumer Complaint Index, you can call the department's Insurance Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390 or visit insurance.mo.gov.
