Get Out the Puffy Coat Winter Is Coming to Sedalia

If you expected us to get away without any major winter weather in West Central Missouri, think again. And get out that warm puffy coat, comfortable hoodie and turn up the heat because we're in for a deep freeze.

According to Weatherolgy the Sedalia area begins the descent into a string of nights with lows in the single digits and highs that don't get above 25 starting later today. We can also expect precipitation and some gusty winds.

Today's forecast isn't too bad. We can expect a morning high of 44 with temperatures falling from 42 degrees at 10:00 AM CST to around 30 degrees during our evening commute. It will also be windy with rain turning to mixed precipitation. The National Weather Service expands on the forecast and says any snow won't really accumulate.

Friday isn't too bad. After a chilly start to the day the high rebounds to the low 40's with partly cloudy skies. Saturday we hover around freezing with a chance of snow. In fact, the best chance of snow through the middle of the next week.

This is when we roll into the deep freeze. Single digit temperatures arrive Saturday night and continue every night through the rest of Weatherology's extended forecast. Daytime highs will hover in the 20's through at least Wednesday.

KSHB Meteorologist Gary Lezak says we can expect the arctic air to stick around for about ten days. Lezak also says two weather models predict that the Kansas City area may see either four to six inches of snow or six to ten inches of snow over the next ten days. The good news, just because that might happen in Kansas City doesn't mean that'll happen in Sedalia or Boonville, or even Warrensburg or Knob Noster.

I knew the winter weather we've been having so far is too good to be true. I mean it's winter in Missouri. And while the weather here is better than the weather I grew up with in Chicago, or the weather I experienced living in Iowa or Michigan, it's still winter.

So we'll brave the bitter cold over the next 10 days and see what happens when we hit the middle of the month. It's quite possible once we get through the next ten days it could be all downhill weather wise from there. Of course I'm not a meteorologist, I'm just engaging in wishful thinking. And that's about as good as the forecast from the groundhog on Tuesday.
