Well, here we are again with one of the best parts of the month. It's time to talk about someone in the West Central Missouri area who has been helping people and making everyone's lives better.

Let's get to know this month's Unsung Hero. Dr. Olivia Bloom is retired Air Force and now is a veterinarian here in Sedalia! She's been at it for about two years now, and she's making a huge impact here locally. That's why she was nominated, and here's Claire Crookshanks, her nominator, to explain why.

Dr. Bloom at the Sedalia Spay and Neuter clinic. Offers low cost spays and Neuters to the community. She has also held free events to help low income families get their animals fixed. She has fixed 3,000 cats and dogs since January of 2024.

What she does is so, so important.  I'm sure everyone reading this is aware of the huge stray animal problem we have in Pettis County. Spaying or neutering is the best way to cut down on the number of unwanted animals in the community. These routine medical procedures not only help control pet overpopulation, but they may also prevent medical and behavioral problems from developing, allowing your pet to lead a longer, healthier and happier life.

So yes, she does a lot of surgeries, but she doesn't just stay locked in the operating theater all the time.  She's also the the shelter vet at the Old Drum Animal Shelter, she's the shelter vet at Whiskey Ridge Horse and Animal Shelter in Green Ridge. So if she's not your vet, she's probably the vet for someone you know.

Seeing how busy she is, of course she didn't have time to come into the studio.  But, our news guy Randy Kirby caught her on the phone to have a quick chat.  Here it is!

Between all that and her kids that are busy with school and sports, it's crazy how much she gets done! I'm almost tired thinking about all the animals she helps on a day to day basis.  And really, they're all members of our families, so she's helping all of us!

If you've got someone in your life or neck of the woods that you know is a huge behind the scenes help like Dr. Bloom, make sure you nominate them to be our next Unsung Hero here. It's quick and free!

Fixingly yours,
Behka
