You know Missouri as the "Show-Me" state. Did you know that we have another title to brag about? Missouri is also known as "The Cave State".

The reason for Missouri to also be known as "The Cave State" is there are over 6,400 caves statewide. Many of the caves that are have been found in the state are small and not for public touring, but there are plenty large enough for you to explore.

For many of the larger caves in the state, some are inspected at least annually and some twice by the Missouri Department of Labor and are found to be some of the safest in the nation.

There are folk legends of some of the caves, i.e., Jessie James hiding in the Meremac Cave in Stanton, or stories of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer hiding in what now is known as Mark Twain Cave in Hannibal.

You can even scuba dive at a couple of lakes in the state. Roubidoux Spring Cave, in Waynesville, along with Bonne Terre Mine are great destinations to check out.

Some of the caves are more well-known and publicized. (Marvel Cave at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Fantastic Cavern in Springfield or Bridal Cave in Camdenton)

There are many more caves listed at visitmo.com with locations  and more information on each of the caves.
