With a generous donation from Veterans United Foundation, Friends of Mid-Missouri Fisher House (www.midmofisherhouse.org) has topped $1 million in local fundraising commitments for the construction of a Fisher House at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Fisher House Foundation (www.fisherhouse.org) has committed to the construction of a new Fisher House on the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital campus in the near future. For more than 30 years, the Fisher House program has provided “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes offer free, temporary lodging to those families, allowing them to be close to their loved one during a medical crisis and focus on the healing process. There are currently 90 Fisher Houses operating in the U.S., Germany and the United Kingdom.

Fisher Houses are between 5,000 and 16,800 square feet and are designed to provide between 8 and 21 suites. They are professionally furnished and decorated in the tone and style of the local region. Each house has a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a spacious dining room, and a living room. The Mid-Missouri Fisher House will include 16 suites and will accommodate 16 to 32 family members. Fisher Houses are gifted to DoD and VA upon completion.

Representatives of Veterans United Foundation presented a check in the amount of $1 million to Friends of Mid-Missouri Fisher House at a brief ceremony on Monday, November 23, near the main entranceway at Truman VA hospital. The ceremony took place at the proposed site for the Mid-Missouri Fisher House.
