The third annual “Wine and Brews on the Avenues” got the go-ahead from Sedalia City Council Monday night after SDDI requested suspension of the code prohibiting open containers of alcohol for a portion of West 5th Street from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.

Participants will need to sign in at the Pettis County Courthouse prior to entering the area next to Fitters Fifth Street Pub, 500 South Ohio, according to SDDI spokeswoman Meg Liston. All will have to sign a waiver as well.

The only concern by Sedalia Police from last year's event was event volunteers not effectively patrolling the participants who exited the bars with open containers into streets not designated for that purpose.

“Are we going to have the same problem?” asked Third Ward City Councilman Bob Cross. Liston assured Cross and the rest of the Council that will not be a problem at this year's event.

Wine and Brews on the Avenues is a tasting event, not an open-container event, she stressed, adding that she has been in contact with the SPD. All local liquor permits have been obtained. Each winery, brewing company and vineyard (vendor) is responsible for securing their own state liquor license.

The Council voted unanimously in favor of the request.
