Sedalia Police arrested a 68-year-old Sedalia woman on a charge of arson Thursday night.

Officer Connor responded to 202 S. Gentry Ave on a fire call shortly after 10 p.m. Upon arrival, flames were visible along the back side of the house, but he was able to douse them with a fire extinguisher.

Several witnesses said they saw a white female leave the area after hearing an explosion and seeing flames, according to the report.

The report also stated that witnesses recognized the suspect and gave the officer a name and vehicle description.

The suspect, 68-year-old Betty Jo Carver Brewer, was located 90 minutes later around 11:40 p.m. at WalMart, 3201 W. Broadway, and taken into custody.

Carver Brewer was transported to the Pettis County Jail on a 24-hour hold, pending the filing of a formal charge of first degree arson.

Damage to the residence included the soffit, fascia, siding and some plants, according to the report. A dollar amount of the damage was not available at the time of the report.
