A 27-year old Sedalia man has been charged in connection to a Saturday shooting that occurred in the 28000 block of Highway U.

A press release from the Pettis County Sheriff's Department says detectives completed a preliminary investigation into Saturday morning's shooting in which a Sedalia man was taken to a Columbia hospital after being shot by a Pettis County Sheriff's deputy.

The press release says deputies were dispatched to Highway U, on a report of a possible suicidal subject arming himself with a weapon. When law enforcement arrived, 27-year old John M. Brandkamp reportedly fired a rifle from the front porch of a residence, before going inside.

The Pettis County Sheriff's Department says Brandkamp then returned to the front yard with a rifle and a handgun. Officers reportedly told Brandkamp to drop the weapons, but he did not comply. Brandkamp then fired the handgun twice, in the direction of law enforcement. A deputy then fired at Brandkamp, striking him once in the arm and once in the leg. Brandkamp also received shrapnel wounds from a third round that struck his rifle, according to the report.

On Monday, Brandkamp was released from the hospital and the Pettis County Prosecutor filed a Class A felony warrant against Brandkamp on charges of 1st Degree Assault. His bond was set at $250,000.

The press release added that investigators are continuing to process evidence and anticipate more charges to be filed.
