The Sacred Heart High School has announce their 31st Annual Free Christmas Dinner.  It’s for the elderly, unemployed, and homeless of Pettis County on Tuesday, Dec. 24 at the Sacred Heart School.

The issue of homelessness isn't something we think about a lot here in Sedalia and Pettis County.  We're a smaller town, and I know growing up that I thought that kind of thing happened to other people, people in the big cities.  But it's real, and it's here.  It might not be as dramatic as some of the depictions you see on TV and movies; a lot of homeless people are just folks who are living with relatives, going from house to house as they try to get back on their feet.  In fact, most of the homeless nationwide are children; their families are working, but there was a setback with rent or the mortgage, and now they're living with friends or family.

This dinner is also for people who are unemployed, the people who are barely getting by and can't afford to spend a lot of money on a big turkey dinner.  Sacred Heart is also thinking of the elderly and homebound.  It might not be practical or easy for them to get to a relative's house.  They might not have transportation, or their families live elsewhere.  Maybe they've got an illness or condition that requires they stay at home.  All of these groups that drift through the cracks of the holiday giving season can be helped by the Sacred Heart church dinner.

They’ll be serving from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria on Christmas Eve.  There will also be free delivery to the homebound.  Call in your delivery from Dec. 1 to Dec. 20 by calling 827-3800 or 827-2311 between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  There will be no one answering the phones on December 21 through 24, so no late orders will be honored.  The deadline is December 20. That's important, because they have to have enough food for everyone who needs it, and they have to arrange all the folks who go out and deliver it. So if you have a relative or friend that might need a meal delivered, get their reservation in now.  There's no cost, you just have to make the call.

Christmasly yours,
Behka
