YOU GUYS.  I think I might need to go on a rant here, if you'll kindly come with me. Why is it that every other movie or tv show is a reboot, a remake, or a sequel?  It seems like every other second you're hearing about another "updated" version of something or another from years ago. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all remakes/reboots/sequels are bad.  I LIKED the new Ghostbusters movie. But for every good one like the Star Trek reboot, there's an Arthur or Conan The Barbarian or The Wicker Man.  And sometimes you might not even know it's a redo. Take, for example, a quick list of movies you MIGHT not have known were remakes:

1.  "Scarface", 1983.  The original was done 50 years earlier, in 1932.

2.  "Three Men and a Baby", 1987.  It was a remake of a French movie called "Three Men and a Cradle", which came out two years earlier.

3.  "Scent of a Woman", 1992.  It was a remake of an Italian movie of the same name that came out in 1974.  Random Fact:  The guy who played Al Pacino's role also voiced Mufasa in the Italian version of "The Lion King".   You're welcome.

4.  "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", 1988.  It was a remake of a 1964 movie called "Bedtime Story", which starred Marlon Brando and David Niven.

5.  "True Lies", 1994.  It was a remake of a French movie called "La Totale!", which came out three years earlier.

And now, you can easily look at TV and find a ton:  Hawaii 5-0, MacGuyver, Knight Rider, Ironside, Charlie's Angels, Dallas, and now... MUPPET BABIES?!

Yes, even the poor, Muppet babies.   Disney has begun production on a reboot of Muppet Babies, the popular animated TV series which ran from 1984-1991. Disney Junior executive vice president Nancy Kanter notes,

"Parents will delight in seeing their favorite Muppets in the mixed animation style they remember from the original series, and kids will be introduced to this warm and zany world made just right for the Disney Junior audience."

The CG-animated series is slated to debut on Disney Junior in early 2018...can you vote me cynical on that?  While some of these work, and are entertaining.... what's wrong with a new idea?  Did we really need a Point Break remake?  Was anyone clamoring for the TV version of Rocky Horror Picture Show?  And that Independence Day sequel?! Really?  Why can't anybody leave good enough alone?

I mean, I get it, in a way.  It's hard to come up with new ideas.  I know it can be a little hard for me to pick out stuff to talk about on the air or blog about.  Sometimes the blank page is intimidating.  But dangit, these people make MILLIONS and BAJILLIONS of dollars.  It's not like they have to go work at the 7-Eleven to make ends meet.  You've got time to let your mind wander a little bit, people!  Let it wander away to some original content!!

Maybe it's just me.  I just think whoever throws money at these ideas could dial it back just a TAD and maybe make one reboot or remake for every five suggestions and we'd be good. For every interesting take on a reboot (like maybe the all female Ocean's Eleven), pass on the dozens of other, crappy suggestion.  Seriously, give money to a new idea!  There are a million writers out there that want to tell original stories.  Have some guts and give them a chance instead of trying to make money on the same idea twice!  Heck, you could even throw a little more money at getting books adapted into movies.  At least that WAS an original story at one point.   Anyway.  I think I'm good now.  What do you think?  Is the sequel/reboot/remake thing getting too much, or do you like the trend?

Rebootily yours,
Behka
