Last Minute Fall News for Missourians: Don’t Rake Your Leaves
I don't know if you're in my position, but I have two rather large trees right in front of my house, and another huge one in the back yard. Which, you know, means leaves. Every year.
And acorns. So many acorns, you guys. It's... insanity. I swear, I can't even step on my porch these days without shoes on, because those little buggers get EVERYWHERE. Stepping on an acorn is almost as bad as stepping on Lego. Just keep that in mind.
Meaning, I'm perfectly capable of being lazy on my own and didn't need this tip. But if YOU needed an excuse, here goes.
Michigan's Department of Natural Resources is in the spotlight for a friendly reminder that it’s okay to skip raking leaves this fall, as it actually helps your yard's ecosystem! The trend of "rewilding" has become quite popular lately, encouraging us to let nature take the lead instead of worrying too much about keeping our yards looking picture-perfect.
In a recent email, they shared, “If raking and bagging fall leaves feels like a chore you dread, just skip it!” Many little bugs and critters rely on those leaves during the winter months for shelter and food. Which, you know, is good for nature or something. They know better than I do.
If you prefer a neater look, they suggest raking up most of the leaves but leaving those around trees and bushes, since they’re super important for local wildlife. Remember, a little mess can be a good thing!
But if you really want to feel good about yourself, you should get no yardwork done.... and just spend all weekend watching football. Do it for the environment.
Leavingly yours,
Behka
