My junior year in high school, I was lucky enough to be chosen to go the American Legion Boy's State in Warrensburg. It was the summer of 1975. Back then it was still Central Missouri State University. The name of the school has changed but it's still a great opportunity for young men.

The University of Central Missouri is hosting nearly 1,000 young men from across the state at the 78th session of the American Legion Missouri Boys State which kicked off Saturday June 17. Since its inception in 1938, Missouri Boys State has provided more than 40,000 high school juniors with the opportunity to study and understand the democratic processes at the core of American society through hands-on experience. Boys State citizens will participate in their own city, county and state governments throughout the week, running for office and accepting challenges in roles that will prepare them to be productive citizens.
