According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a southbound 1997 Volkswagen pulled into the path of a southbound 1999 Dodge driven by John W. Haase, 19, Cole Camp. The VW was struck in the rear by the Dodge, the report said. The driver of the Volkswagen was later identified as Kristopher G. Paxton, 23, of Sedalia. Reports indicate the driver fled after the crash and that law enforcement was actively searching for the subject.

Killed in the accident was Bonnie J. DeBates (Hayworth), 22, Sedalia. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Pettis County Coroner Robert Smith at 8:54 p.m. Her body was taken to Heckart Funeral Home where arrangements are pending.

Paxton, who suffered minor injuries, was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident, according to the report. The one-year-old was wearing a safety device. It is unknown if DeBates was wearing a safety device.

The Dodge had minor damage, while the VW was totaled. Both were towed from the scene by Don's Truck Towing.
