In closed session Monday night (April 14), the Sedalia School District 200 Board of Education approved the hiring of Brennan Scanlon as Smith-Cotton High School boys basketball coach.

Scanlon has been head coach of the boys basketball program at Mexico, Mo., since 2007, compiling  a 134-57 record and being honored twice with conference coach of the year honors (2011, 2013) and three times with district coach of the year (2011, ’12, ’13).

Scanlon, who will serve as a physical education and in-school suspension teacher, graduated from Central Methodist University in Fayette in May 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Before becoming head basketball coach at Mexico, he served as head coach at Elsberry High School, racking up a 44-33 record, and as an assistant basketball coach at Rock Bridge High School, Fayette High School and CMU.

In 2012, he was inducted into the Rock Bridge Athletic Hall of Fame, and during his playing career he was a USA Today High School Basketball All American (1996 and ‘97) and a McDonald’s High School Basketball All American (1997).

“We are very excited to have Brennan Scanlon as our boys basketball coach,” Said Smith-Cotton Activities Director Rob Davis. “He brings with him experience as a head coach of successful programs and has shown the ability to build consistent winners. He has a passion for basketball but also has a passion for developing young men. As he builds basketball programs, he builds a family atmosphere with his team and understands the importance of chemistry built through open communication.  I believe he will fit perfectly into our community.”

Scanlon said: “It is an honor for me and my family to be a part of the Smith-Cotton family and I am excited for this opportunity.  I know it takes hard work, dedication and commitment to build a great program; therefore, I am excited to meet the players and start working toward next year.  This summer is a very important time for us.  We can accomplish so much and can begin to build the foundation for this program.  I believe that if players work hard year in and year out, together we can be successful and become one of the top teams in the state.

“I am so excited for this wonderful opportunity.”

This press release was written by Bob Satnan, Communications Director for Sedalia School District 200.
