At 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 1, smokers will have to snuff out their cigarettes and bar owners will empty their ashtrays as Sedalia's smoking ban goes into effect. Although the ban passed with a 6-2 vote at a city council meeting last June, not everybody is happy about it. Bottom's Up, a Sedalia bar affected by the ban, will be holding a "Burn the Ban" party, counting down the minutes on Saturday night until smokers can no longer comfortably light up inside.

Staff at Bottom's Up were very vocal in their strong opposition to the before it was passed, believing it would strongly affect their business and that it infringed on the rights of business owners in Sedalia. Despite voicing their opposition at city council meetings, the ban passed, and smokers in violation of the ordinance face a fine up to $50.  Business owners that fail to enforce the ordinance could receive a fine up to $100 for the first violation and up to a $500 fine for repeat violations. Bottom's Up will be counting down to midnight this Saturday night (Aug. 31) when the bar will officially and reluctantly become smoke-free.

Bottom's Up is inviting anyone who would like to enjoy their last opportunity to light up publicly indoors within the Sedalia city limits to join them for music, great drink specials the special countdown to midnight.

If you haven't been there before, don't expect a haze of secondhand smoke, the bar is well circulated and plenty big enough for patrons to enjoy the atmosphere. This will be the last opportunity for smokers to enjoy their habit indoors before getting kicked outside.
