You Can Now Monkey Around at the KC Zoo
If you're looking to get the family out of the house the Kansas City Zoo is reopening tomorrow, May 16. There are some changes and you'll need to make reservations before you go. Here's what you need to know according to the Kansas City Zoo's website:
- All guests will need to reserve the time their party will be arriving at the zoo. Arrival times are being spaced out every fifteen minutes to insure there isn't a crowd at the gate. This policy includes everyone including free pass holders and friends of the zoo.
- Zoo capacity will be limited to keep within Kansas City's coronavirus guidelines.
- If you feel ill, the zoo asks that you wait and visit the zoo at another time when you feel better.
- If you arrive at the zoo earlier than your admission time, please wait in your car until your admission time. This will keep crowds down at the front gate.
- Indoor exhibits will be one-way traffic, as will pathways around the Africa section of the zoo and through Australia and Tiger Trail.
- Animal shows and zookeeper chats are still suspended, however they are available virtually.
- All zoo rides except for the African Tram are closed. The African Tram will have limited capacity due to social distancing guidelines.
- West Africa (across the swing bridge) is closed.
- Water fountains and refill stations are closed, however, there will be some food and beverage options available for guests.
- Playgrounds and play equipment is closed.
- For the safety of the animals feeding and touching opportunities have been suspended.
Additionally the zoo asks that guests practice safe physical distancing, and guests are also encouraged to wear a mask. Zoo employees will be wearing face masks for guest safety. And everyone is encouraged to use the hand sanitizing stations set up around the zoo.
It sounds like it will be a little different experience if you head to the zoo in the short term. Yet, in my mind it sounds like an adventure. And while some of the zoo's features aren't operating. I bet if you go sometime in the next week or two, you might not have to worry too much about crowds. Then again, if cabin fever has taken hold, who knows how many will show up to monkey around at the Kansas City Zoo.
