One of the toughest things in life is choosing vegetables and/or fruits from the store or an area vendor. You know, the ones that are the best of the best. Tomatoes, cantaloupe,'s a person to know which one is the best? Well, when it come to watermelon I think I've come up with the answer to that age-old question.

The worst thing you can do is cut into a watermelon thinking you're getting ready for a sweet treat only to be disappointed. The summer treat most always brings a smile to faces when a slice is placed in front of them. How do you make sure you've chosen the right one? Let's find out!

The selection should be  based on three characteristics: presence of seeds or lack thereof, size and ripeness. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to read the label that tells you whether it has seeds or doesn't have seeds. The ripeness thing is something different.

According to, measuring the sweetness of a watermelon is done by the Brix count. This count is actually a "scale-count" giving the watermelon a rating of how sweet is. Usually a count of 10 or, even better, 11 is the what you're shooting for measuring sweetness. 10 is standard but an 11 is considered very sweet. If you're lucky you'll even find ones with a rating between 11 and 13.

  • Tip 1: Find the yellow belly, or the field spot - This spot on a melon shows where it was laying on the ground while attached to the vine
  • Tip 2: Tap the underbelly and listen for a deep sound - Knock on the outside of the melon. Listen for a deeper sound. Unripe melons will sound more hollow.
  • Tip 3: Look for a dull and heavy watermelon - It may not be the most pleasing to the eye, and it will be heavy as you pick it up.
