What Today’s Sedalia Still Has In Common With 1925 Sedalia
I don't have to tell you that a lot of things have changed over the years here in good old West Central Missouri. It's the one constant. Sure, we may see a ton of change and improvements all around our little area, and we might be getting some buildings.... but some things never change.
I saw this post on Reddit the other day, and I was just reminded of that. Some things...stay the same. And in this instance, I'm talking about the famous Sedalia Snark. You know what I mean. Check this out.
The Sedalia Democrat, Missouri, September 3, 1925

Now, if the picture isn't loading, or if you can't read it, it's an excerpt from The Sedalia Democrat back in 1925. It's "Suggestions for More Weeks". I'm assuming it was a response to the stuff you still hear today, about national this week or national that month. I'll unpack that.

For example, May is National Military Appreciation Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, and also Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. May is also, however, National Moving Month. See, I can understand why we might want or need a National Military Appreciation and all that, but did we NEED National Moving Month? Just like how May 14th, 2025, is National Underground America Day, National Buttermilk Biscuit Day, and National Decency Day. Decency Day, sure, but are biscuits really....hurting for positive attention? Have they been cancelled? People love them.
ANYWAY.
The suggestions for "more weeks' are hilarious. Dress Sloppy Week? I do that already. Kindness to bootleggers week? I assume they wanted that in prohibition, ha! Everybody Wear Poison Ivy Week literally made me laugh out loud. But my favorite is......
Better Swearing Week.
Oh lawrd, I can see how someone here would suggest that. Especially these days! If you're gonna holler at somebody in traffic or comment online, better swearing is in order! Maybe that's what they should have called for when the City Council asked for more "decorum". It should have been housed as "better swearing", instead. Obviously I'm just kidding, guys.
It's the Sedalia Way.
Maybe ask your Grandpa about that. He might have a story or two.
Swearingly yours,
Behka
