Union Pacific Bringing Their Big Boy Steam Engine to Sedalia & Warrensburg

Railroad fans, history buffs, and kids of all ages are in for a rare treat.

Seeing one of Union Pacific's Heritage Steam locomotives, Big Boy 4014, on the tracks throughout West Central Missouri including Sedalia and Warrensburg.

Big Boy 4014 is one of twenty-five Big Boy locomotives built exclusively for the railroad, which took delivery of the first one in 1941. These massive locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. The Big Boys served the Union Pacific between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyoming with their service ending in 1961.

Big Boy 4014 was re-acquired by the Union Pacific in 2013 and restored the engine as part of the railroad's heritage program. Union Pacific returned Big Boy 4014 to service in 2019, the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad's completion.

Big Boy 4014 will be departing Cheyenne for a tour through labor day and will be visiting cities like Fort Worth, Houston, New Orleans, Denver, St. Louis, and Kansas City. The complete tour schedule for Big Boy 4014 can be found here.

From Monday, August 9 - Wednesday, August 11 Big Boy 4014 will be in Kansas City then heading out on a journey that will take it through Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas before returning to Missouri at the end of August.

Big Boy 4014 will be calling at Jefferson City at 3:15 PM CDT on Monday, August 30, and Depart Jefferson city On Tuesday, August 31 at 8:00 AM CDT and travel through West Central Missouri.

Bog Boy 4014 will arrive at 105 W. Pacific Street (roughly the Amtrak Station in Sedalia) at 10:45 AM CDT. It will be in Sedalia until 11:30 AM CDT.  Then arrive at the Warrensburg Train Station, 100 S. Holden at 12:30 PM CDT, departing at 1:00 PM CDT. The train will then call in Pleasant Hill at 2:15 PM CDT and Lee's Summit 3:20 PM CDT, Independence at 4:20 PM CDT before arriving in Kansas City's Union Station at 5:20 PM CDT. Big Boy 4014 will be available for viewing only at Union Station Wednesday, September 1.
