Several cars from a Union Pacific Railroad train derailed west of Smithton Friday evening, according to a Nixle alert from the Pettis County Sheriff's Office.

The alert was sent out just after midnight Saturday morning.

Union Pacific personnel, troopers and deputies were on the scene and determined there was no danger to the public.

An unaffected section of the train was blocking the Highway 50 spur crossing on the western end of Smithton for a time, the alert noted.

Two cars on their side were visible from Pony Path Road on Sunday afternoon.
