Things We Ate In Sedalia That Didn’t Seem Weird Til We Grew Up

So the other day, I decided to make myself a little snack.

I said to Husbando, "I'm gonna go make myself a peanut butter and bacon bits sandwich." He looked at me like I had grown a second head. Like I was no longer his wife of several years, but a literal stranger that had been implanted into my body by aliens from deep space.

I guess he'd never heard of that? But then I started to think.... maybe that was just an "our family" thing. As a kid I just loved that combination of bacon and peanut butter, but was it that way for everybody? Maybe not. So I thought to ask you guys on our social media what stuff you ate as a kid in your family that you didn't realize was weird until you grew up. And boy oh boy, you guys came through again. Some of your answers were pretty funny, and interesting!

Okay, now I can understand that, especially if you're on a farm or something and have to butcher cows, maybe.  I've never had it, but I've seen James Corden eat them enough that I think I'm good. But Carol wasn't the only one!

Well, yeah.  I mean, it would be hard to convince someone to try it.  Maybe I would? I don't know, I'm rethinking myself a little.

I Googled it, and it's another name for what looks like a sauceless Sloppy Joe.  I'm pretty sure I've had one of those over the years.  Like she said, not strange, but I haven't heard it called that.

Dish rags Lol - I didn’t know it wasn’t a thing until I was an adult. My great grandmother evidently started it. It is semi-sweet to sweet yeast bread after the first rise. Tear off a plum - mandarin orange size piece, pat it out and fry it in about 1/2-1” of oil in a cast iron skillet. Very yummy, excellent hot out of the pan, or slightly cooled and slathered with butter. Also great with either honey or homemade jam. I’ve never seen them cool or left over, but I’m sure they’d be good too. But they really do look like a dishrag that was left wadded on the counter to dry.

I'm glad she explained that, I was worried her family was out there eating towels. But no, they sound tasty now that she told us!

I cannot say that I've ever, knowingly, anyway, eaten roadkill.  I have heard of people doing it - particularly with deer - but... it just seems too risky to me.  How long has it been out there? What's been eating on it? Is it healthy? No thanks.

Now that isn't weird to me! Well, I mean, I put some ranch on my burritos sometimes.  Or sometimes I'll substitute french onion dip. But not on tacos, anyway.

I have heard of those, and I've heard of whole festivals where people eat them. But I don't think I've ever had them. And I don't think I would have tried them as a kid if you told me what it was.  Or, even really, if I thought it was an oyster.  I was a weird kid.

I.  Woah.  I cannot imagine this.  I cannot imagine the combination of a crunchy radish with butter on bread. I just can't fathom it.  But maybe as a kid I would have tried it? I mean, I was a weird kid.

I looked this up on Google and it basically looks like a sweet casserole. I probably would have eaten that as a kid. Heck, I might even eat it now. Husbando wouldn't touch it because it has cottage cheese in it, but hey.
