Story Time: The Worst Job Interview Ever (Featuring Pita Chips)
Every time I get a little frustrated with my job, I remind myself of not so great jobs I've had in the past. It's not that hard, I've had a lot of jobs in the past. In college, I worked sometimes two to three jobs all at once. I'd do home health, worked retail, worked at the library desk, picked grapes, I'm pretty sure I've told these stories before.
But in my college years, while there were a lot of jobs, there were even more job interviews. I'd say for every one job I'd get, there would be maybe two or three I didn't get. I was just a college kid. Sometimes my schedule wouldn't match theirs, sometimes I didn't have the right experience, and sometimes.... I didn't want the job.
Queue Story Time.
Think back to the olden days of about 1999/2000. I was in Warrensburg, taking full time classes, and trying to get a part time job. I got an interview at a local establishment! I was stoked. I won't tell you where or who, but I was told by the caller that I'd be interviewing with the owner. SO, naturally, I tried to bring my best to the table. I show up about ten minutes early, resume in hand (although they'd already had me fill out an application). I was prepared.
About ten minutes after our scheduled time, I was summoned to the back of the building to a relatively decent sized office. After pleasantries, he started in with the normal questions. Then,...things got weird. The guy seemed pretty disinterested. Then he opened a bag of pita chips...ate them in front of me....and washed it down with a Coke.
I was like, the heck? That had never happened to me before. Sips of coffee, yes, but full on snack time? And the worst part is, he kind of halted the interview to do it. He asked me a question, opened the bag, ate while not looking at me, and then drank like half the can of soda. I finished my answer after pita chip four. He ate 17. I counted. It was that awkward.
I didn't get the job. Don't think I would have wanted it, either.
What's the strangest thing that's happened to you during the job search? Have you ever noped out of a job before you even got it? What's a strange question you've been asked at a job interview?
Pitaingly yours,
