SPD’s Coloring Contest Winners Rewarded With Drone, Trophy
The top three winners in a drone art coloring contest at several elementary schools were recognized with a drone of their own on Monday.
The contest was organized by Sedalia Police Officer Nick Camirand and sponsored by several local businesses.
Camirand is also a drone pilot with the SPD, one of a half dozen drone pilots who respond when needed when incidents occur where drones are highly useful.
Sedalia District 200 elementary students, as well as St. Paul's Lutheran and Sacred Heart kids, participated in the contest, the first of its kind in Sedalia.
Officer Camirand explained the reason behind the contest.
“So we wanted to do something to give back to the community, give back to the kids. We wanted to give away some drones, and we came up with the idea to do a coloring contest as a way to give away some drones,” Camirand commented after a school assembly was held Monday afternoon at Washington Elementary, 7th and Engineer.
The top three winners at each participating school received a drone and a trophy.
“It was really awesome to see the kids and the reactions on their faces when they found out they won the contest,” Camirand said.
Judging was done by Smith-Cotton art teacher Josh Heimsoth.
There was no first, second and third place among the top three winners recognized.
Sedalia Police Chief Matt Wirt accompanied Officer Camriand to each school.
Officer Camirand was one of the original members of the SPD's Drone Unit and spearheaded the contest, including helping to raise the funds.
“All of the sponsors were super willing to help whenever we asked them,” Ofc. Camirand told KSIS. “We really didn't have anyone who told us no."
