A Smithton man was killed in a Cooper County vehicle wreck that occurred early Friday morning.

The MSHP reported that an eastbound 2016 Kenworth driven by 46-year-old Aaron T. Poindexter of Troy struck the rear of a an eastbound 2007 Volvo driven by 35-year-old Kelvin F. Shepard of Wichita, Kan., at 3:18 a.m. on I-70 at the 98.4 mile marker in Cooper County.

The Kenworth then crossed the I-70 median and overturned. A westbound 2007 Kenworth then stuck the towed unit of the 2016 Kenworth and exploded upon impact.

The driver of the 2007 Kenworth, 65-year-old Dale J. Jorgenson of Smithton, was killed in the crash and pronounced at the scene at 3:54 a.m. by Cooper County Coroner Chris Howard.

Jorgenson's body was taken to Howard Funeral Home in Boonville.

Poindexter and Shepard were transported by Cooper County Ambulance to Pinnacle Regional Hospital for treatment. All three drivers were wearing a safety device, according to the report.

Both Kenworths were totaled. The Volvo had moderate damage.

A total of nine Troopers were at the scene.
