Sedalia’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s Setting Out to Raise $37,000

The 2016 Walk to End Alzheimer's in Sedalia will take place at the Missouri State Fairgrounds on September 10.

"Most people have either a connection (to Alzheimer's) or they have a family member that has a connection," said Linda Fisher, a member of the local Walk to End Alzheimer's committee. "With 5.3 million people in the United States with Alzheimer's - 110,000 in Missouri -there are a lot of people affected by this disease. And it's such a devastating disease that people rally around trying to find a cure, trying to help the people that have Alzheimer's and their families."

According to Walk to End Alzheimer's chair Jessica Snell, walkers are able to register now, and walk-up registration will be available on the day of the walk. "Registration actually opens up at 8 a.m., the ceremony's at 9, and the walk starts at 9:30." Snell says that there will be a number of additional activities, in addition to the walk. "Just Get In Photo Booth will be there for the second year in a row. Last year we had face painting and I believe we'll have it again this year." Snell says there might also be some additional fun for Walk to End Alzheimer's participants that are fans of Pokemon Go.

Fisher says that while walkers can register the day of the walk, preregistration, especially online registration, is preferred. "Once you're online then people can make donations to you using a credit or debit card." Online registration also makes sharing participants campaigns on social media very easy.

Several teams have already signed up for the year's walk. One team has approximately 150 members. According to ALZ.org, the Sedalia walk already has a commitment of nearly $6,000 in donations. The goal this year is $37,000 for the Sedalia walk.
