I'd love to know how the internet knows stuff like this. A new study claims that Missouri drinks more beer than Illinois, but barely. Let's explore how they came to this conclusion.

Let me confess that this seems weird for me to share since I don't drink. Not judging, that's just my choice. However, I'm good enough at math to see that the study shared by VinePair shows Missourians consume more beer per person than Illinois. They even included a handy map.

How do they know who's drinking the most beer anyway?

According to the methodology shared, they came to this conclusion based on data from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. I suppose they would know.

It's only fair to state that the ranking is based on per capita (meaning per person) data. When it comes to actual volume of beer that has been consumed, Illinois dwarfs Missouri with over 243 million gallons downed versus nearly 123 million gallons in Missouri. Dang, that's a lot of suds.

As to why Missouri drinks more beer per person compared to Illinois, I'd have to guess having a major brewery in St. Louis likely helps that ratio. Every time someone goes to a Major League Baseball game in St. Louis, they go to Busch Stadium after all. I wonder if Irish whiskey was counted, how would Illinois fare in that comparison? Inquiring minds want to know.

The entire Vinepair ranking is interesting if beer is your passion.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
