Five Famous Movies Filmed in Missouri

In 2014 'Gone Girl' starring Ben Affleck became the No. 1 movie in America. It was shot in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Here are five other famous movies that were shot (or at least partially shot) in the Show-Me State.

Winter's Bone

Jennifer Lawrence is insanely popular right now. In 2010, Lawrence starred in 'Winter's Bone,' filmed in the Ozarks. The movie won the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic Film at the Sundance Film Festival, and received Academy Award nominations for  Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Filming locations included Forsyth, Missouri and Branson.

The Abyss

The largest underground lake in the world can be found at the Bonne Terre Mine in Bonne Terre, Missouri. Some of the underwater scenes from James Cameron's science fiction film 'The Abyss' were shot there.

You're Next

Did you happen to see the horror movie 'You're Next,' last summer? It was written by Columbia native Simon Barrett, and was filmed in Columbia. ABC 17 says that the home featured in the film is located near the Columbia Country Club.

Escape From New York

With a title like 'Escape From New York,' one would naturally assume that the movie had to be shot in... St. Louis? Quite a lot of it, in fact, was shot in and around St. Louis. Famous locations including Union Station and the Fox Theater made appearances in John Carpenter's 1981 film.

Up in the Air

George Clooney starred in the 2009 film 'Up in the Air,' which was shot primarily in St. Louis. While the movie featured several scenes that were fictionally set in other cities, St. Louis often substituted for those other locations. The St. Louis Business Journal estimated that the city would experience an economic impact of at least $50 million from the film shooting in St. Louis.
