Missouri's Gas Tax Is Going Up Again. Did You Save Your Receipts?

It has been nice to be driving thought the state and knowing that despite the high prices, they are still lower than most states. I fueled up on my way back from the St Louis area on my vacation and now have a full tank. Lucky for me. Beginning Friday, Missouri is raising it's tax gas. It will now be 22 cents per gallon.

Missouri taxes are increasing as consumers continue to face pressure at the gas pump, with average retail prices at Missouri stations peaking at about $4.70 per gallon in June before declining slightly to close out the month, according to a GasBuddy analysis. Have you been saving any of your gas receipts? If you have, you may know you could get a refund. To pass the tax increase in May 2021 Missouri lawmakers included a loophole allowing motorists to claim a rebate on new fuel taxes paid. If you kept receipts from Oct 1 2021 and June 30th 2022, you can get a refund on the original 2.5 cent increase. To claim the refund, taxpayers must fill out a Form 4923-H, which asks for vehicle identification numbers, as well as information for each transaction, including seller name, address, date of purchase and number of gallons purchased.

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
