‘Mad Max’ Trailer: Everybody’s Gone Out of Their Mind
This new Mad Max: Fury Road trailer comes to us from Japan and is mostly a condensed version of the previous trailer, with a few new scenes added on. No matter. Even at just over one minutes with Japanese subtitles, it's still knocking our socks off.
It's hard to say anything new about Mad Max: Fury Road at this point that a) we haven't already said, and b) isn't completely obvious by watching this trailer. Yes, it looks completely amazing and insane (and other relevant synonyms) and, we mean this in the best way possible, unlike anything we've seen come out of Hollywood in a very, very long time.
Even the character names are great! This movie follows Max, Furiosa, Nux, Immortan Joe, Rictus Erectus, Toast, Capable, Splendid, The Dag, Fragile, Slit, Miss Giddy and Come-Doof Warrior. These are the main characters in a $150 million summer blockbuster. As studios are regularly cutting costs and minimizing risks, Mad Max seems like one of the biggest risks in years. And, at least based on this footage, it appears to be paying off.
For those attending the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, you may be the first to get a look at the film. Director George Miller will be in attendance screening original Mad Max film Road Warrior, and is reportedly bringing along approximately 20 minutes of Fury Road to show the audience. (Warner Bros. ran a similar promotion last year when Gareth Edwards brought footage of Godzilla to SXSW following a screening of Gojira.)
Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.
Mad Max: Fury Road opens in theaters on May 15.
