The Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology has done a 6-year study of the chemical Chlormequat. Here's the shocking result. People reports that 80% of Americans have been exposed to this chemical thanks to its inclusion in some of the most popular cereals available in Missouri. They say this chemical is a "chloride salt".

The study just published says this about "Chrlormequat":

Toxicological studies suggest that exposure to chlormequat can reduce fertility and harm the developing fetus at doses lower than those used by regulatory agencies to set allowable daily intake levels

Here are the 7 cereals that reportedly have this chemical:

  • Cheerios
  • Honey Nut Cheerios
  • Cheerios Oat Crunch Oats n' Honey
  • Frosted Cheerios
  • Quaker Old Fashioned Oats
  • Quaker Instant Oatmeal Maple & Brown Sugar
  • Quaker Chewy Dark Chocolate Chunk

It's important to include statements shared by People from General Mills who say that all of their cereals are created well within federal regulations. The point of the study is the regulations allow too much of this chemical based on the infertility findings. They also report that Quaker has not commented yet on their cereal inclusion in this study.

If you're concerned, I would recommend reading the complete study results yourself to make an informed decision about your breakfast choices.

For the record, I've eaten plenty of Cheerios in my life (and plan to continue to) and have not had ANY fertility problems.
