Don’t go to Chicago, Illinois on August 19th & 20th
Chicago is one of the best places in the World to visit, just not on August 19th & 20th, here is why...
Not a day goes by since I moved out of Chicago to Quincy 4 and a half years ago, that I don't miss the Windy City. So much to do, so much to see, and such incredible places to eat and drink, but there are two weekends every year in Chicago that are absolute nightmares, Lollapalooza and The Air and Water Show, which is happening August 19th & 20th this year.
"Between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Aug. 19 and 20, Chicagoans will be able to see – and hear – tricks from high-speed civilian and military pilots and aircrafts. Practice will take place beforehand on Aug. 18 and viewers can watch the weekend's show from along the lakefront from Fullerton to Oak Street. Although there are no public seating areas provided during the show, viewers are welcome to sit or stand on the sand or grass areas in the park with North Avenue beach as the show’s focal point."

Why is the Air & Water Show weekend one of the 2 weekends to avoid traveling to Chicago? The people. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the lakefront for the show, and it is a traffic and logistical nightmare. Plus, like Lolapalooza, people enjoy adult beverages and it can make for an even messier day. If you have never seen the Air and Water Show it is a fun sight to see, the noise, the sounds, it is impressive. But plan ahead, get there early, don't drive, and be prepared to be patient.
I write this as a warning to all the other people who were planning on taking a weekend trip to Chicago in August don't go during the Air & Water Show it's not worth it. That weekend is not a weekend to take the train just to do some sightseeing, shopping, and dining. The city will be even noisier and more crowded than usual, don't say you haven't been warned...
