We're approaching a notorious anniversary in Missouri weather history. It was the hottest day in the history of the state and I have to wonder if this temperature mark will ever be equaled again.

The University of Missouri Climate Center remembers what happened on July 14, 1954 in Warsaw and Union, Missouri. Both places recorded a staggering high temperature on that day of 118 degrees.

How hot and dangerous is 118 degrees Fahrenheit?

Heat stroke is an almost immediate danger. Spend any length of time outside in that kind of heat and your health is at risk.

Will Missouri ever see this high temperature record broken?

While the state is still under severe drought conditions, there's no indication that the temperature during summer 2023 will approach the 118 degree mark level. The Old Farmer's Almanac forecasts that the Show Me State could see temperatures as high as 110 this summer, but that's still a far cry away from the record of July 14, 1954 in both Warsaw and Union, Missouri.

It's quite possible none of us will live long enough to see 118 degrees topped in Missouri. The record has stood for almost 70 years and doesn't appear to be in danger of being exceeded anytime soon.
