UCM Alumnus Delanie Walker’s Aunt and Uncle Killed by Drunk Driver Shortly After the Super Bowl

UCM alumnus and San Francisco 49ers tight end Delaine Walker’s aunt, Alice Young, and uncle Bryan Young were killed around 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, shortly after the Super Bowl, allegedly by a drunk driver according to Walker’s Twitter page.

Walker posted the following message and photo via Instagram on Feb. 6:

“Im going to miss y’all but i know they are in a better place..” Walker said in another tweet.

“The Youngs’ vehicle was stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 10 in LaPlace, just west of New Orleans, when it was hit by a car driven by 26-year-old Nechole T. Thomas of Houston,” said Trooper Melissa Matey of the Louisiana State Police.

Her 2002 Mercedes slammed their 2012 Nissan Altima from behind at high speed, Matey said. Both cars caught fire and the Youngs’ bodies were not found until the blaze was out.  Matey said it took until Wednesday afternoon for the coroner to identify the Youngs.

Thomas escaped with minor injuries and was jailed on charges of reckless driving, drunken driving and two counts of vehicular homicide – a death involving a drunken driver. Her bond is set at $300,000, according to foxsports.com.

The 49ers general manager Trent Baalke issued a statement of condolence, requesting privacy for Walker and his family as they grieve.

We extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to Delanie and his family as they grieve this tragedy.  Our organization is here to support Delanie through this tough time, as we do with all of our players and staff. At this time, we will respect their family’s privacy and ask others to do so as well.

Walker is a former All-American from the University of Central Missouri. After attending UCM, he was drafted by the 49ers in the sixth round. Walker is one of only two UCM players to make it to the Super Bowl. He has 124 receptions, 1,485 yards, and eight touchdowns for his career, 22 catches and 364 yards, from this season, according to ucmathletics.com.

In this year’s Super Bowl he laid a punishing hit on Raven’s returner, Jacoby Jones, and helped boost the 49ers back into the game.
