I'm not a golfer. The last time I played golf was in 2009, and the last time before that was...never. It's not really my thing. I'm just more into sports where what you do actually affects your opponent. However, I'm always down to go try something new, and this was for a good cause, so I figured I'd give it a try.

Last Saturday (Oct. 5) was The Boys and Girls Club of West Central Missouri's "Last Swing Before Spring" fundraiser at Triple Creek Golf Course in Cole Camp. It was a four person scramble, which means you just use the best ball out of your group on every stroke.

Well that was good for me, because I suck. While warming up on the driving range I tore up an incredible amount of grass. I also might have broke Mike's driver. Oops.

Actually I wasn't too bad, it's just that I never ever play golf. I have played hockey my entire life though, which I guess is pretty similar, and I'm somewhat athletic, so I was able to get by on that for the most part. My problem is whenever I had a bad shot, it was really bad.  I mean REALLY bad.

Luckily my teammates were able to carry me. Mike (A.K.A. Ray the Janitor) and his friend Jerry are both pretty decent golfers, and Mike's son Fisher is really good, especially considering he's only 11 years old.

It was a little chilly at first, and we did have a rain delay, but that was just a good excuse to eat some burgers and hot dogs! The sun came out eventually, and we ended up shooting a 71, par for the course. More importantly, we did NOT come in last place, so I'd consider that a success! Even though I'm not big on golf, it was a really fun event, and raised some money for a good cause. I'm looking forward to playing again next year.
