Sedalia is the home of the Mid Missouri Outlaws football team. Recently the Outlaws’ starting quarterback, Kyle Middleton suffered a broken collar bone in a game against the Council Bluffs Express, and for the first time in team history, a new quarterback got a start. Jeremy Spears received the call to finish out the game against the Express and was named the starter against the Springfield Wolfpack.

Although he is the new starting quarterback, Spears is not a new face to the Outlaws. He has played three seasons indoors as a receiver, running back and even a little defense from time to time. Spears says that he and his brothers have long been used to being utility players and just wants to help the team however he can.

Spears hails from the Kansas City, Kansas and Wyandotte County area. Spears graduated from Olathe North before going to Highland Community College, then Coffeyville Community College before ending up at the University of Central Missouri.

Spears says after UCM, he thought he was going to stop playing football, when the Outlaws called and gave him a chance to play. Spears felt his versatility of playing multiple positions over the years would be beneficial to the team. “I love being versatile and playing many positions, I’ve always strived to be a perfectionist,” Spears said. “I love being versatile, you always get a piece of the action, you always get revenge on the person who hit you, or whoever intercepted your ball.”

Spears is known for his speed. While he is a natural runner, he wants to be a more effecient quarterback and try and stay in the pocket more. The Springfield game gave him confidence in his first start. Spears completed 16 passes in his first game, and felt he made strides when he threw a 23-yard pass to Marcus James for a touchdown enroute to a 28-12 victory.

Spears says he is looking forward to playing the Kansas Koyotes this Saturday (June 9) at 7 p.m. in Topeka, Kansas, since that’s where he’s from and likes to have a good game in that atmosphere. Spears likes the home crowd in Sedalia more as they always bring their A-game with the cowboy hats, cowbells and cheering.
