Admittedly, I'm not someone you would call an "outdoorsy person".I'm more of the person you leave behind to clean up the house when the rest of you run to the woods to....hike or something.  I don't know what you do.

BUT, I have been watching a lot of shows ABOUT the outdoors.  Kind of.

I've been telling you about Game Warden shows for a while.  They're great.

There's nothing in my life so far that has been quite the same as me sitting on my couch, laughing at some idiot because he was caught red handed out in the woods.  Anyway.  I can help you NOT be that idiot when it comes to catch and keep trout fishing season.

So, I've seen enough episodes to know that fishing season is huge, there are a lot of people who are involved, and there are a LOT of rules.  Well, a lot for the Wardens to remember.  We only  need the basic knowledge.  You know, enough to keep you from getting a ticket from a Game Warden.

Basically, if you're over the age of 16, you have to have a fishing license/permit.  If your kid is under that age, you're okay as long as the adult supervising the kid has the license.  I'm not sure what the deal is with the over 65 crowd.  Maybe Grandpa doesn't have to have a permit! I do know, though, you also have to have your daily trout tags. They're not hard to get, though.  And not expensive, either. You can buy them at:

Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon and Montauk State Park near Salem. The cost of a resident fishing permit is $13 for the year or a daily fishing permit is $8. The price of a daily trout tag is $4 for adults and $3 for anyone 15 and younger.

The parks’ stores will be open for purchasing trout tags. The hours are:

  • Roaring River State Park
    • Park store will open 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 29 and will not close until 7 p.m. Friday, March 1.
  • Montauk State Park
    • Park store will be open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29.
    • Park store will be open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, March 1.
  • Bennett Spring State Park
    • Park store will open at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 29 and will not close until 7 p.m., Friday, March 1.

So I'm sure the die-hards are already out there as we speak, but if you were thinking of getting out and  having some fun, go for it!

I'll hang back and put something in the slow cooker for ya when you get back.

Fishingly yours,
Behka
