Freezing Rain Advisory Issued for Pettis County This Friday
UPDATE: The Freezing Rain Advisory issued for Pettis County has been moved from 3 a.m. to noon on Friday, Dec. 20 to 2 a.m. - 9 a.m. Friday morning. Drizzle or light rain will overspread the area late this afternoon/evening and transition over to freezing drizzle or light freezing rain tonight into Friday morning, possibly impacting the morning rush hour Friday.
Travel on roadways may become difficult by Friday morning due to a glaze of ice on exposed roadways and bridges. As a result, a freezing rain advisory has been issued for much of the area. Ice accumulations are expected to be light but will make travel conditions treacherous.
A second storm system will move into the area this weekend, spreading a mixed bag of freezing rain, rain, and snow across the region. Light ice accumulations are possible Saturday morning, and accumulating snow is possible Saturday night into Sunday across much of the region. This storm is likely to have an impact on holiday/weekend travel on Saturday and especially Sunday.
The national weather service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill has issued a freezing rain advisory, which is in effect from 3 a.m. to noon on Friday, Dec. 20, for portions of East Central Kansas and West Central Missouri, including Pettis County.
Drizzle will develop this evening and continue into tonight. A cold front will move through during the overnight hours, changing precipitation to freezing drizzle or light freezing rain. Behind the front. Freezing precipitation will continue through Friday morning.
Ice accumulation of less than a tenth of an inch is expected.
"If you are traveling, you may see everything from winter storms to severe thunderstorms and even a tornado or two, although we are only looking at winter weather here," reported Dave Clippert, Director of Sedalia-Pettis County Emergency Management Agency.
Ice accumulating on surfaces such as roads and sidewalks will cause conditions to become slick. People planning to travel tonight and during the morning commute should use caution when driving and monitor road conditions.
A freezing rain advisory means that periods of freezing rain or freezing drizzle will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving.
