Event coordinator Dr. Angela Schubert of CMU spoke with KSIS about the walk. She is the program coordinator for the Master of Science Clinical Counseling Program, based at SFCC.

"What we are hoping to do is to raise awareness and severity of eating disorders and the prevalence of eating disorders on college campuses," she said.

"It's very different from any other disorder or addiction," Dr. Schubert noted. "What makes it different is the fact that every 62 minutes, at least one person dies as a direct result of from an eating disorder, whether that's anorexia nervoasa, bulimia nervoasa or a binge eating disorder. In fact, it affects at least 30 million people of all ages and genders in America every year."

Registration is $10 per person and can be completed online at eventbrite.com. Look for "Sedalia Eating Disorder Awareness Walk." All entries will receive two raffle tickets. And the first 60 registrants will receive a complimentary T-shirt.

Registration for the walk will also take place on the day of the walk from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday, May 6.

A community yoga session is planned from 8:30 to 9 a.m. "We are going to have a yoga instructor from the Sedalia area, and they're going to provide a nice, meditative yoga experience for everybody to start off the walk," Dr. Schubert said.

There will be presentations from speakers at 9 a.m. to begin the ceremony. Dr. Schubert will be one of the speakers. She is the only eating disorder therapist in a 30-mile radius of Sedalia.

"Most people would say it's female disease, and it's not. It doesn't discriminate against anybody," Dr. Schubert noted.

The ‘Eating Disorder Awareness Walk’ will begin at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to end at noon. A raffle will follow the walk, Dr. Schubert added.

100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Missouri Eating Disorder Association, it was noted. For more information, or to donate, call (660) 596-7156.

The event is supported by the Missouri Eating Disorder Association (MO-EDA). MO-EDA is the only eating disorder organization in Missouri that provides critical and targeted information through curriculums designed to address eating disorders and its deadly health epidemic.
