Let me preface this with one simple fact: I am NOT a fashionable person.  I wear jeans (usually black), polo shirts and casual shoes.  I lack the ability to go into a store and say "I like the way that looks and want it."  Judging by the fact that there was a reality show called "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy," I'm not alone.  But I HAVE learned one or two things over the years.

On the list of things that would get you made fun of in my youth is wearing dark socks with sandals.  Any socks would get you a certain amount of ridicule, but one simply didn't DARE to wear black socks with summer footwear.  That was reserved for the vacationing old men with beer bellies and metal detectors on the beaches of Florida.

Today, I attended an awards ceremony for our area youth.  Each kid was being called out by name and paraded in front of an audience of other young people and parents.  A surprising number of our kids were wearing....yep.  Dark socks with sandals (or flip flops).

As parents, it is our job to teach our children the ways of the world.  It is our job to keep them from committing social atrocities that will not only get them laughed at, but pointed to as well.  Assuming we aren't raising future coastal treasure hunters, we MUST make an effort to get stop this madness.

Either that or I'm out of touch.  It could go either way.
