“On Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Sedalia Police Department’s Community Policing Unit, in partnership with Walmart, proudly participated in the DEA’s 28th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

We were honored to join more than 4,400 law enforcement agencies across the country to give our community a safe, simple, and anonymous way to dispose of unused and unwanted prescription medications.

Thanks to the incredible support from our community, the Sedalia Police Department collected approximately 50 pounds of medications – including tablets, capsules, patches, liquids, and even vaping devices – helping ensure these items don’t fall into the wrong hands.

Events like Take Back Day are vital in keeping our homes and neighborhoods safe. Unused medications left in homes can too easily lead to misuse. By safely removing these items, we take another important step in preventing prescription drug abuse and protecting our families.

We want to sincerely thank everyone who took the time to stop by and drop off their medications. Your efforts made a real difference – and your care for our community showed!

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), opioids like oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine are among the most commonly misused prescription painkillers. That’s why initiatives like this are so important.

Since the launch of the program in 2010, Americans have safely disposed of more than 19.2 million pounds of medications. Sedalia is proud to be part of that success story.

If you missed this event, don’t worry: you can still safely dispose of medications year-round! Many pharmacies, including CVS and Walgreens, offer permanent drug disposal boxes. Check with local facilities for locations near you.

Together, we’re building a safer, healthier Sedalia, one step at a time.”
